I want to get myself and my friends some special beer this christmas. So I decided to look up some winter ales. I am stuck between some choices. Sierra Nevada Celebration, New Belgiu 2 Degrees Below Winter Ale, and from asking this question before I on here. I was recommended by 2 people to try Black Butte Porter

of the 3 which do you recommend for myself and as a gift to 2 of my buddies.

New Belgium, Sierra Nevada or Black Butte

Please do not give anyother beers then the ones I stated about becuase I dont want no Sam Adams or no mumbo jumbo. Please only give your choice among the 3 or dont answer this question!

Daniel asks…

What is the best imported beer that is widely available?

My boyfriend’s birthday is coming up and part of his gift is going to be a 6-pack of beer. I wanted to get a good import beer, but have no idea what to look for. He usually drinks Budlight, but I assume that is just because he is young and it is relatively cheap. My mother mentioned Amber Bock…I just don’t know. What would you suggest?

Brian answers:

Sounds like he has a good girlfriend. Believe it or not, some people really do like crap beer. Most do not. However, when it comes to something like a gift you want to be as spot on as possible. Heineken or Guinness are probably the most widely available imports you’ll find. Both have their loyal followers and their loyal haters. Get as much info as you can on the kind of beer he enjoys, it is particular type of beer, perhaps a particular brewery or even a specific beer. Saying something like “I know you drink Budweiser because its cheap, but what beer would you drink if you had more money?” Or you could say simply “I know you drink a lot of beer, what is your favorite one to drink?” Then just go from there. The extra little bit of effort will be well worth him knowing how much you cared about him.

Sandy asks…

Need help identifying a beer label!!!?

My brother in law received a gift pack of various beers. He really liked this beer but he doesn’t remember what it was called. He does remember that the bottle was brown, it had a green label with a FROG IN A TUXEDO on it. He said something about on the box it saying, “It makes you hoppy” or something like that. Any ideas??? Thanks!

Brian answers:

My guess would be something by Hoppin’ Frog brewery in Akron, Ohio. I personally don’t recall a Tuxedo wearing frog on any of the labels though, just frogs holding beer.

Donald asks…

How can I get German beer in USA?

My b/f went to Germany a few years back and is still raving about a beer there called “Isolomer” (Im not sure if that is the correct spelling though). I would LOVE to get him a pack of it for his birthday, or as an extra Christmas gift, but I cannot seem to find it anywhere!
Any ideas would be great.
Thanks so much.

Brian answers:

Go to any self respecting liquor store with import beers and ask if they have it in stock.

If not, he will order it for you…

I just did the same thing for “Key West Sunset Ale”

Stuff is amazing!

Betty asks…

Gift for pregnant friend that she will enjoy after she has the baby?

My husband and I are going to a diaper party for our friends who are having a baby next month. The soon to be mom is having a shower of her own where she will receive gifts so she decided to throw this for her boyfriend since his birthday is coming up soon. Anyways its a keg/diaper party, where the price for the keg is a pack of diapers. I don’t drink beer so I technically don’t have to bring diapers ( my husband will) so I want to bring something for the soon to be mom that she can enjoy after she has the baby. Any suggestions?

Brian answers:

I know that after I had my baby and after I have this one if I got something I really wanted it would might be a gift certificate to a day spa, get a massage, have a day to myself so would need someone to watch the baby for a few hours. Gift certificate to a clothing store that has various sizes so I can get a few new clothes that will fit my body b/c I won’t know what size I am till after the baby. Hope that helps!

New neighbors in same apartment complex invited me for dinner tonight. I suppose I should bring something right? A 6-pack of nice beer? Bottle of wine? Problem is I dont know anythiing about wine…what would an appropriate price be? Is beer not cool for the 27-30 year-old range?

Thanks

Brian answers:

Try the wine it is more classy …. Shutter Homes White Zinfandel the year don’t matter it is a sweet wine that most ppl like and is only about 8 to 15 dollars at most and it will be great with anything they serve!!

Joseph asks…

How do you refer to a preference for imported beer?

I have several relatives who like expensive, imported beer. As a gift for them, I bought six 6-packs of nice beer and will give each relative a six pack containing one each of the 6 types. The hope is they will have a chance to try a beer or two they might not otherwise have tried. Since I don’t know anything about such beers, I made a list by asking bar tenders to tell me what varities are popular these days.

In the course of buying these beers, I have found myself at a loss to describe just what belongs in this category. I understand the concept of “fine” wines and/or liquors, but when it comes to beer, I really don’t have a clue. Clearly there is more to it then “expensive” beers or “imported” beers and I suspect my relatives might be insulted if I used either of those terms to refer to their beer preferences.

Even as I write this question I can hear people saying, “What is your problem?” But they don’t know my family. It seems they fall into two camps. In the one camp are the folks for whom I am buying this beer. And the other camp is made up of folks who accuse the first group of being snobs who are just trying to show off with their beer brand choices. This causes a fair degree of defensiveness in the first group. I don’t want to insult anyone, I just want to give a gift that my relatives might enjoy.

Can anyone out there identify with this and tell me a safe, noninsulting way to refer to my relatives’ beer preference?

Any help, thoughts, insights will be welcomed without judgment.

Brian answers:

Beer

I believe you answered it already. “Can anyone out there identify with this and tell me a safe, noninsulting way to refer to my relatives’ beer preference?’ The last word being key, it is a beer preference. You might add aficionado/connoisseurs if that works. In another turn of events some people and myself included call themselves beer-snobs. A snob acts as such so it does not apply to people that simple prefer flavors in the foods or beverages that they consume. It is an outward attitude of defiance and superiority. Myself and friends use it as a means to defy those that cannot accept a different set of standards for preference and we use it much in the same way an African American might use the “N” word. Does this encapsulate your beer loving side of the family? Tell them all to relax and have a beer.

Steven asks…

Can I ship beer from SC to a friend who lives in SC?

I want to send a buddy of mine a housewarming gift but I cannot visit him for some time. He and his wife love tasting new beers so I thought it would be fun to ship a variety pack to them. Can I do this? We both live in SC (Greenville and Columbia respectively).

Brian answers:

I went to ship at ups and they said it was not legal, so I just wrapped it up and went to mail box etc. And I didnt say anything about the wine and my friend received it hassle free!!
