All about the Beer Keg Refrigerator

A beer keg refrigerator is a relatively new piece of technology that has the purpose of dispensing beer to people through a tap in the comfort of your own home. In the past, you would have to head out to the pub to keg a cold, draught beer, but a home kegerator makes this possible at any time of the day on any day of the week. One thing to keep in mind is that purchasing a keg for around the house is much cheaper than buying cans or bottles of beer. Therefore, buying one of these refrigerators will actually save you money in the long run. The beer will also last as long as six months once it has been stored, so you will not have to worry about your beer going bad once you place it in the fridge.

You can find your beer keg refrigerator in a number of different makes and models, depending on your personal needs. The largest variety of a home kegerator has four taps on it and a built in ice machine. These are perfect if you will be having frequent parties at your house, as it allows you to have four different types of beer on tap. Most people, however, do not need a beer keg refrigerator this size, as they can easily use a smaller one for around the house.

The smaller models of these refrigerators will fit behind your home bar, making them extremely good choices for a smaller home. It is even possible to simply put your fridge under the sink, which will allow you to run your tap out of the faucet. The sky is the limit when you purchase one of these products, since there are so many different options for you to choose from. If you are a beer lover, this will definitely improve your quality of life, since you will have cold beer at your fingertips whenever you want it.

Those who love beer will love a home kegerator because it will keep your beer at the perfect temperature all day long. Having your beer at the right temperature will ensure that you receive the proper amount of head, so your beer will not over foam. You do not want your beer to go through drastic temperature changes once the keg has been tapped and the beer keg refrigerator will make sure that this does not happen to you by keeping the beer at 38 degrees.

There are a number of different places at which you can purchase a home kegerator, so take a look around and find the one that is best for you. Some companies even sell conversion kits, which will allow you to turn an ordinary fridge into a beer keg refrigerator. If you do not want to do it yourself, however, make sure that you purchase a model that has already been built, as this is the easiest way to have cold beer around the house whenever you want it.

How to make a Homemade Kegerator

For anyone who truly loves beer, a HOMEMADE KEGERATOR is what we would all love to have. Even for the most novice person, you can build one with a few tools, and a conversion kit. This project should only take you about an hour or so. For this project I am going to discus a full size refrigerator into a kegerator. There are mini kegerators, and chest kegerators and those that have up to 4 taps, but I will talk about that later in a different projects. But for now, just a single tap on an upright fridge.

Some tools you will need are:

Screwdrivers
Power drill
7/8″ hole saw
Measuring tape
Used refrigerator
Conversion kit

Lets start:

1) You will need to find a used upright refrigerator, you should be able to find one about anyplace fairly cheap. When you do acquire one, you should take out all the racks, and clean it good.

2) Find a place you would like to place it. Now we need to make sure it is level, place the level inside or on top of the fridge, you may need to use plywood, 2x2s, and a few shims, to make it even.

3) Before you start drilling a hole for the tap, make sure you put it low enough so the freezer door can open without hitting the tap handle. Start from the inside of the door and measure where you want the tap, then put a mark there, then go to the outside of the door and do the same thing.

4) Now that you have located where to place the tap, you can start drilling. Drill a 1/4″ pilot hole through the whole way through the door to get us started.

5) Now take and drill a 7/8″ hole on where you started you pilot hole, for your shank.

6) Then secure you’r shank in the door with with the lock nut in your kit, and now you are ready for the tap to go on.

7) Install the drip tray around a foot below the tap by putting screws into the door to hang the tray on.

8) Take one end of your beer hose and push onto the end you the shank, then tighten with a clamp.

9) Take the other end of you’r beer hose and attach to the keg coupler, and tighten.

10) Now take your air hose and push it onto the nipple sticking out of the keg coupler, and tighten with a screw clamp.

11) Take the other end of your air line and push over the nipple on your regulator and tighten it with a screw clamp.

12) When you fasten the keg coupler on the keg, make sure the handle is pushed back to the “off” position. Then fasten to the keg. Then depress the handle to tap the keg.

13) Open the valve all the way on the C02 tank

14) Pressurize the keg by placing the handle of the shut-off valve on the regulator in the “open” position ( straight up and down).

Some Tips:

Your CO2 tank will need to be filled. Welding suppliers or other places in the phonebook.

Beer should be kept at 36-40degrees. make sure your keg is cold before you tap your beer, or you may end up with a lot of foam.

When you order your kit you will get step-by-step instructions on what to do. Check your conversion kit to make sure you will get everything you need. All kits are a little different.

Most Importantly enjoy your ice cold beer from your new homemade kegerator, just in time for football season.

Home Brew Hints – Sanitizing Your Bottles and Equipment

Before you bottle your beer, you have to sanitize the bottles, otherwise bacteria can form in the bottle and ruin the entire batch.

The first step of the process is to prepare a place for the bottles to sit while they are being sanitized. This should be a place that can hold 50 beet bottles. In home brewing, the best place for this is the bathtub. To prepare the bathtub, first scrub the tub will with bleach, then fill it up with water and a full bottle of bleach. Let this solution sit for a day and rinse.

The second step is to make another mixture of bleach and water. This mixture should be approximately one teaspoon of bleach per gallon. If doing this in a bathtub, it is about 2 cups of water. The proportion of this mixture does not need to be perfect, so don’t get too tied up making it exact.

Next, put the bottles into the tub (or whatever you are using to hold the mixture) making sure that the inside of the bottles are filled with the solution. Any other equipment used in the bottling process should be in the tub with the bottles. Everything should sit in the solution for about 20-30 minutes.

Rinse the bottles very well. Bacteria can ruin the batch of beer and so will extra bleach left in the bottle. When rinsing, do not touch the rim of the bottles with your hands. Move the bottles touching them on the outside. Continue to keep the bottles sanitary until the beer is capped.

By Drew Brown

There are all kinds of places where you can buy your home brewing system components. Or you could visit all kinds of little shops to get all the pieces that you need. In the end you need choose where to put your home brewing set ups and you will need to know how to. When you bought a complete kit then their probably will be some kind of instruction with it how to put it all together. But if you bought the pieces separately you could use some advice.

Finding the right spot

First you will have to think about where you want to put your home brewing set up. Maybe you have already thought about a good spot in the house but maybe you should reconsider it the place you have in mind is probably going to upset your spouse. You need to find a spot in the house where you don’t bother other people in the house and it is not such a great problem if you spill some fluids. Another thing is that your setup will need to stay in that place for some time, at least until the whole brewing process is done so it should not interfere with any interior decoration. On the other hand, maybe you like something to break the ice the next time you are having a dinner party. At least make sure that no one, neither children nor pets, can knock over any of your setup. Make sure that the place where you put the whole set up is a fun place to be, the last thing you need is that you don’t like to be in the room where your hobby resides. It should be so large that you can store all your supplies in that same place, that way, if you need something, you don’t have to walk out of the room and leave anything unattended.

You Brewing system should be three tiered

Maybe you haven’t heard of the three tiered brewing system yet, but if you ask some of the hobby brewers, you will surely meet when you start with this craft they will surely tell you that this is the set up to go for. You will need some display racks, of the heavy duty kind, and three kettles. These are connected with each other through some tubing, this way it can flow from one kettle to the other one. The big advantage of this set up is that you can make a larger beer batch and the brewing process is somewhat automatic.

So start with this hobby and join the thousands of people around the world that have started before you. Once you have tasted your first batch you will want to continue to create the next one.
