Russian Imperial Stout – Resurrecting a Recipe

Russian Imperial stout has been brewed by craft brewers for some time. It’s a heavily flavored brew, with a high alcohol content. The brew originated in London and got its name because it was imported to Russia. The high alcohol content was a necessity, rather than a creative option. It was needed to protect the beer from spoiling on the long journey and to protect it from freezing, as well. The original recipe, once used to brew beer that was shipped to the court of Catherine the Great II, has been born anew thanks to the inventiveness and labor of several brewers in the UK and a competition called, The Great Baltic Adventure.

The brewers recreating the recipe included the oldest existing brewery in England – Kent’s Shepherd Neame, which was founded in 1698. Other companies include Meantime Brewing Company and London Brewery. The goal of the competition was to create as close to the original recipe as possible and then sail with the brew to Saint Petersburg for the vaunted Magerfest beer festival there.

The voyage takes five weeks and requires that teams land in several ports, including Helsinki and Cuxhaven before moving on to Saint Petersburg. Once there, the brews will be opened and tasted. The winner may be able to ink a deal with Russian breweries to revive the original Russian beer brand and corner the niche market for dark beer in Russia (where beer is becoming more and more popular as alcohol comes under heavier fire from government sources).

There will be a panel of judges to judge the 11 different entrants and choose the best option. The panel is made up of international judges, and does include several Russian brew masters, as well. If successful, the contest could result in the recreation of a brand not seen in a very long time.

For those of us not lucky enough to attend the festival in Saint Petersburg and who will likely never get to taste the fruits of those brewers’ labors, there are options available. As mentioned, Russian Imperial stout is brewed around the world and there are tons of excellent options right here in the United States. North Coast Brewing Co. offers Old Rasputin, while Victory Brewing offers Storm King. You will also find Brooklyn Black Ops, Stone Imperial Russian Stout, Bell’s Expedition Stout and quite a few other options on the market, too. While these recipes might not have graced the lips of Catherine the Great, they’re good enough for us!

A Small Tour Into the Guinness Beer Brewing Industry

In world there are many different types of alcoholic beverages. Many of these are firm favorites with people. One of the all time favorites is that of beer. While there are many different beer brands that we can enjoy drinking we shall instead take a small tour into the Guinness beer brewing industry. This tour will however mainly focus on the Guinness brewery and not on the technical parts.

As most of you are aware Guinness beer is an Irish beer that is styled after the alcoholic drink called Porter. The main brewery where this beer is made can be found in Dublin, Ireland. The brewery’s name is that of Saint James’s Gate Brewery. From this brewery alone the companies has produced many different variations of Guinness beer.

For a short time period you could find the London branch of the Guinness brewery as well. This branch closed down in 2005. All of the production that had previously occurred here at the Park Royal Guinness brewery was continued in the original brewery. This closure is probably due in part to the belief of British Guinness beer drinkers that the Irish brewed beer tasted better than the English version.

There are currently many different countries that import various types of Guinness beer. The number of varieties of beer which are made from this company are 19. Each of these beer varieties come in differing strengths and in some cases variations. There are many times when the original recipe of the Guinness beer has changed its composition. This change can occur for many reasons.

There are times when the change is due to the various alcoholic and beer laws which may be in place. In these instances the components of the beer which are not allowed for those distributing countries is taken out and replaced with another acceptable item. The usual items which are used for the production of Guinness Beer are ones water, hops, brewers yeast, and barley malt.

To provide the beer which the signature Guinness beer taste a portion of the barley is flaked – this process is also called steaming and then rolling – and next it is roasted. The end taste of this process is one that we are all familiar with. This flaking process and roasting also gives the beer its dark ruby coloring.

A nice cold beer on a hot day – there are few things in life that are more pleasurable, and a visit to their favorite bar for a couple of glasses of their chosen brew is an ideal way for many people to round off the working week.

However, prices can be a major sticking point for many, as price increases have taken a nights drinking to the level where it is now something that has to be balanced against cost. Although there are other reasons to be restrained when it comes to having a few drinks, such as the health benefits of drinking responsibly, many of us have come to the conclusion that there is no reason to pay higher prices when it just doesn’t seem worth it.

People have been aware of the benefits of having a home brewery for some time now. Still, there is a sense that it’s not the same as bought beer – that it somehow isn’t as good. Some people feel that it is just too much effort when it is readily available in stores and bars all around them. Times are changing though and the sky high prices in local bars and liquor stores mean that the money saving benefits of a home brewery are too big to ignore any longer. Remember that home-brewed beer is not lesser than paid for beer; it is just a matter of trial and error. Certainly so, when compared to what you would spend on a months worth of trips to your sports bar to watch a couple of games at a time, you can begin to see big savings very quickly. Believe me, by the time you’re producing a quality end product, you’ll have no shortage of people wanting to pay you a visit .

As hobbies go, home brewing is something that can make perfect sense. Rather than having a hobby that goes nowhere, the beer lover can enjoy the feeling of making something themselves, with the added advantage that no beer tastes finer than that which you have brewed to your own recipe. The endless variations that you can come up with will make it more fun than you could imagine, and all for a reasonable price.
