home brewery beer/cider making kits. Are they any good, is the end product nice?? UK!?
I am thinking about one of those £50 kits which will make about 40pints, but im a bit dubious about how the end product will taste, will it be an anticlimax and give me a headache or will it be worth it????
any experiences??????
The kits can work fine… in theory.
If you do everything right you’ll end up with something passable and learn a lot about how beer is made. If you screw up like 3/4ths of the people I know who’ve given it a go you’ll end up with something tainted and undrinkable and learn a lot about how beer is made and why buying it at the store is such a good idea from then on.
I’m not sure if the bigger kit (like you’re describing) is more fool-proof or produces anything better than the cheaper kit I’m familiar with. The ingredients you get will be pretty mediocre but you can always upgrade the hops and mix a few things to try to improve your end product.
Experiences:
My wife got me, my father and my brother a kit for Christmas one year. Nowhere near 50, ours would have been half that, so keep that in mind. We all started at about the same time and were going to swap brew at the end. What we brothers ended up doing was drinking 1 of dad’s and tossing ours into the weeds. Mine skunked and clouded over (got something into the mix somewhere, touched something I shouldn’t have, licked something, I don’t know) my brother’s didn’t ferment right and ended up with a sea of particles in it. Dad’s tasted like… well, a mediocre ale, I guess. He ended up making the second batch (pilsner? Don’t recall) and I pitched the whole lot and bought a case of decent stuff. Never tried Dad’s second go. The whole experience was fun, even if the product was crap.
A guy I know brews his own beer and started with a nice kit. I guess he got it right and enjoyed himself, now he’s upgraded to some actual hardware and orders decent stuff from… I don’t know, Germany I guess. He tends to put out odd, fruity beer or chile beer and such. It’s a fun bottle to try first before we break out the stuff we bought.
