beer making kit

beer making kit
home brewery beer/cider making kits. Are they any good, is the end product nice?? UK!?

I am thinking about one of those £50 kits which will make about 40pints, but im a bit dubious about how the end product will taste, will it be an anticlimax and give me a headache or will it be worth it????
any experiences??????

The kits can work fine… in theory.

If you do everything right you’ll end up with something passable and learn a lot about how beer is made. If you screw up like 3/4ths of the people I know who’ve given it a go you’ll end up with something tainted and undrinkable and learn a lot about how beer is made and why buying it at the store is such a good idea from then on.

I’m not sure if the bigger kit (like you’re describing) is more fool-proof or produces anything better than the cheaper kit I’m familiar with. The ingredients you get will be pretty mediocre but you can always upgrade the hops and mix a few things to try to improve your end product.

Experiences:
My wife got me, my father and my brother a kit for Christmas one year. Nowhere near 50, ours would have been half that, so keep that in mind. We all started at about the same time and were going to swap brew at the end. What we brothers ended up doing was drinking 1 of dad’s and tossing ours into the weeds. Mine skunked and clouded over (got something into the mix somewhere, touched something I shouldn’t have, licked something, I don’t know) my brother’s didn’t ferment right and ended up with a sea of particles in it. Dad’s tasted like… well, a mediocre ale, I guess. He ended up making the second batch (pilsner? Don’t recall) and I pitched the whole lot and bought a case of decent stuff. Never tried Dad’s second go. The whole experience was fun, even if the product was crap.

A guy I know brews his own beer and started with a nice kit. I guess he got it right and enjoyed himself, now he’s upgraded to some actual hardware and orders decent stuff from… I don’t know, Germany I guess. He tends to put out odd, fruity beer or chile beer and such. It’s a fun bottle to try first before we break out the stuff we bought.

A Bottoms Up Plan for Losing Weight

Seven hundred and fifty liters. That’s the amount of liquid the average man guzzles each year. Approx 130 liters of beer, 200 liters of cooldrink, 90 liters of milk, and a whole lot of liters of other stuff.

Feeling a bit bloated? You should be. But the great thing about drinking so much is that all you have to do to lose weight is make a few adjustments to the type of drinks you’re already pouring down every day. Juice with pulp instead of pulp free. Green tea instead of regular. Do it all and you’re gulping approx 150 000 fewer kilojoules in four weeks. That’s a saving of nearly five kilograms.

Your Morning Juice

Unless you’re an astronaut or a skinny 10 year old boy, trade in that old favorite Cabana for the thick fruit stuff. – juice with extra pulp or a smoothie. It may help you resist the lure of the office sarmie basket. Researchers found that people stayed full longer when they drank thick drinks than when they drank thin ones – even when kilojoules, temperatures, and amounts were exactly equal. Thicker drinks help fight off hunger longer.

Your Mid Morning Break

Even if your taste in tea runs more toward Long Island than iced, there’s a reason to consider adding a bit more of the stuff to your diet. It’s a natural fat burner. But not just any tea will work. You need to buy the stuff marked ‘green’. A swiss study found that substances in green tea called catechin polyphenols can significantly increase your body’s metabolism of fat so you burn the stuff at a faster rate. Buy green tea at any good health shop and brew some up.

Lunch in a Can

Meal replacements really work. Researchers found that regularly drinking meal replacements increased a man’s chances of losing weight and keeping it off for longer than a year. But which one should you drink? Men trying to lose weight need about 2500 kilojoules per meal, with 25% of those kilojoules from protein, 25% from fat, and 50% from carbohydrates.

Post Work Out Smoothie

Bananas don’t just fend off muscular cramps. They also fight hunger. The scent of bananas tricks your brain into thinking you’ve eaten a lot more than you really have, making you fuller faster. Men who drank yoghurt shakes that had been blended until they doubled in volume ate 400 fewer kilojoules a day than men who drank shakes of normal thickness. The extra volume helps to fill you up and curb your appetite.

Cooldrink for the Drive Home

The best place to get used to the taste of diet cooldrink is a café. The cooldrink at those places is always ice cold. The colder a diet cooldrink is when you’re drinking it, the less you’ll notice the difference in taste. Wean yourself off regular cooldrink altogether.

Evening Beer

There’s nothing wrong with ‘lite’ beer, except of course the embarrassment factor. Make better beer choices and see your weight come back to normal.

Why do beer and wine companies pay you to drink beer?

The beer and wine companies all over the world invest heaps of dollars on market research to get the responses of customers like you, me and other beer and wine drinkers to check if their beer is worth the money and time invested in manufacturing them and if there is potential for product improvement. We are looking at about billions of dollars spent on market research.

This data is so crucial to beer and wine companies and they are eager to pay you for beer sampling and wine tasting. All you have to do is learn how to find your way into beer focus groups and/or wine focus groups.

How do you get into a beer focus group?

Typically, a beer company will contact a market research firm and get them to organize a beer or wine tasting session made up of beer drinkers with certain demographics. If you are enrolled with this market research firm and your characteristics match the demographics needed for that sampling session, you get an invite. You go to a pre-arranged location and give your opinion on the beer or wine you drink. You get paid for doing this.

Some of the crucial features to keep in mind in a beer tasting group are:

a) the bitterness of the beer owing to the elements such as hops, roasted barley and herbs

b) the sweetness of the beer – due to the amount of sugar present in the beer

c) the alcohol level of the beer as in the % of alcohol due to the amount of fermented stuff actually transforming to alcohol

d) the viscosity of the beer when you feel it in the mouth. It is also called mouth feel and

e) lastly the color of the beer

Some of the useful features to keep in mind in a wine focus group are:

a) European wines are labeled according to the location they come from (Bordeaux for example)

b) Non European wines are labeled according to the grape used in the making of the wine (Pinot, Merlot etc)

c) Wine tasting involves evaluating the quality of the wine using your senses

d) Differences in color, taste, smell, body and development of wines happen due to the dependence on the type of grape harvested in the year of their production

e) Flavors due to wine aging in oak casks include coffee, vanilla or chocolate and this has nothing to do with the grape itself
